K-POP
k-pop refers to popular music gaining popularity in Korea.
It is sometimes simply called “pop”, and popular music in the Anglo-American region is called “pop”, and popular songs from countries other than the United States are also written as “K-POP”, with national initials. In particular, after Korean pop songs became popular abroad, the name K-pop is widely used as a name for Korean pop songs outside of Korea.
The history of the evolution of K-pop
Starting with the music of first-generation idols such as H.O.T., Sechs, and God, who debuted in the late 1990s, they opened the door to K-pop by showing some strange and addictive songs of electronic sound and hip-hop at that time. After the second generation of idol boy groups and girl groups achieved great success in Korea and abroad, there has been a growing tendency to define the word K-pop by limiting it to the music of these boy and girl groups. In the past, it was a feeling that encompassed all Korean music, but recently it seems to be used as a meaning of just dance music or idol music made in Korea. On the other hand, solo singers may fall into the category of K-pop artists in a broad sense, but there are cases where they are not acknowledged. There are critical voices such as "How a solo singer is a k-pop singer."
HISTORY
In the 1990s, the Korean record market was the most booming, and Kim Gun-mo's <The Wrong Meeting> recorded more than 2.5 million copies of a single album, and was listed in Guinness Korea.[1] Currently, BTS's 4th regular album MAP OF THE SOUL: 7 has sold more than 4.17 million copies, breaking this record. At the same time, Taeji Seo, children, and Seunghun Shin surpassed the sales of 1 million copies. Also, in 1990, Kim Wan-seon sold 1 million copies for the first time as a female singer.[2] Young singers at the time such as Jaeha Yoo, Seungcheol Lee, Seunghwan Lee, Haechul Shin, 015B, Hyunchul Kim, Sang Yoon, Youngseok Yoo, Jongshin Yoon, and spring, summer, fall, and winter, which led the qualitative leap of Korean popular music in the late 80s and early 90s and expanded the territory of popularity at the same time. The influence of the writer group was unbroken and continued to Yoo Hee-yeol and exhibitions, and it forms an important axis of modern K-pop by presenting a musical example or coexisting in the underground centered on Hongdae.
K-pop, led by the current boy and girl groups, goes back to H.O.T and Shinhwa, the idol groups of Sechskies and SM Entertainment. As these groups imitated the success model of the boy group and the musical direction of mixing various elements of Seo Taiji and children in the 1990s, the Korean pop music industry began to transform into the current K-pop industry. They are a genre that mixes electric dance, rap, and sometimes R&B, and were popular with fandoms mainly in their teens and twenties. Deuce, who gained music and popularity that rival Seo Tae-ji and her children, later became an example of the spontaneous Korean hip-hop scene. Park Jin-young's JYP Entertainment also did not fall behind their efforts, and the legacy of Seo Tae-ji and children later formed an axis of modern K-pop called well-made overground idol music centered on Yang Hyun-suk's YG Entertainment, and occupied an important part in terms of musicality and ability. have.
In the 2000s, as the record market rapidly decreased, it was difficult to exceed 200,000 copies of record sales. After that, as the record market recession continued, the market system focused on the online market.[3] However, exactly 12 years later, in 2013, group EXO's first album surpassed 1 million copies in 12 years after Kim Gun-mo's 7th album and group God's 4th album in 2001, reinvigorating the music market. Since then, each album released has sold 1 million copies, setting a record unprecedented as a quintuple million seller. Currently, EXO's cumulative album sales exceed 10 million copies, which is the first record among singers who debuted in the 21st century. After that, BTS also gained great popularity, breaking the record for the highest sales volume of a single album in 24 years, and surpassing the cumulative sales volume of 10 million for the second time after EXO. Currently, BTS' sales volume of albums exceeded 15 million copies. After the Wonder Girls announced their entry into the US as'Nobody', they entered 76th place in the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time as a Korean.[4] In addition, in the 2010s, many groups announced their advancement to Japan [ambiguous expression], and Girls' Generation was ranked No. 1 on the Japanese Oricon single chart daily with'Gee'.[5] In addition to this, Kara was on the Oricon chart, causing the Korean Wave. In 2012, singer Psy took second place for 7 weeks in a row on the Hot 100 Chart, a single chart on the US Billboard with'Gangnam Style. Since 2015, the K-POP fan base has been making progress and accumulating achievements in the Western world. Currently, idols are making the most visible achievements in overseas regions such as the United States, North and South America, and Europe.
Nowadays, although Psy's Gangnam Style song, BLACKPINK, Twice, and BTS' influence, there was a growing awareness of K-POP in the United States, but in the early 2010s, there was a time when a meaningful movement was caught. It was often noticeable that Hyuna's bubble pop gained significant local reactions, such as enjoying a cult popularity among role enthusiasts as the background music of the League of Legends play video rose. G-DRAGON's fashion and TAEYANG's wedding dress song made a small hit among local college students in the United States, and the cover craze also blew.
There are cases where it is ambiguous to classify it as idol music, but there have been some cases of planning or actually proceeding to advance to the US after receiving a love call from a local producer. Singers like BoA and Seven are representative cases. However, most of them returned to Korea bitterly without achieving meaningful results for various reasons including local circumstances. Not only that, in the case of Wonder Girls, which was the most famous case among the public, at the level of their management company, they promoted to enter the US, but unlike the tremendous success in their home country, they had to return to Korea without receiving such a response.
BIGBANG's ALIVE album, released on February 29, 2012, became the first Korean album to enter the Billboard main chart. Ranked 150th on the Billboard 200.[6] BIGBANG's MADE album released on December 13, 2016, ranked 172 on the Billboard Main Chart, Billboard 200, 4 years after the ALIVE album.[7]

Black Pink also set a record of 1 billion views of music videos for the first time in a girl group, and 100 million views in the shortest period of music videos. Characteristic
Some of the perceptions of foreign media
The BBC expressed Super Junior and Wonder Girls as "a well-produced, nice and pretty boy, a girl group that uses eye-catching choreography and catchy melodies." K-pop symbolizes a young and attractive'pretty' boy and girl group.
Internationalized music
Overall, it can be said to be a combination of pop, rock, hip-hop, R&B, and electronic music, and it is called more global music because it has the characteristic of combining Asian performances with Western sounds. The so-called sword group dance and difficult choreography movements of Korean singers contributed greatly to leading K-POP globally. Currently, K-POP is having a great influence not only in Asia but also in the global music market.
There are also many foreign producers who give songs to Korean singers. These include Will I Am and Sean Garrett, and Teddy, who grew up in the United States. There are also many hip-hop singers who collaborated with K-pop singers. This includes Acorn, Kanye West, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, and Will I.M. He also receives songs from Norway and Sweden. In the "Wall Street Journal," a producer said, "Korea wants a Scandinavian style for the beat of the United States."
Digital album
In the case of music sources for first-generation idols, CDs could only be obtained from record labels, but as the size of K-pop increased with the emergence of second-generation idols, album production and supply sources increased sharply, and not only record companies, but also bookstores or marts. Accessibility has been increased so that it is possible.
The composition of the album has also changed, but in the past, only CDs were contained in a packaged case, but nowadays, not only CDs, such as photobooks including CDs, jacket albums, and various types of photo cards, but also various compositions that draw out the visual interest and purchasing power of fans. There are arms in it. Currently, not only CDs are purchased, but also music sources are purchased from streaming sites, and digital singles, that is, music sources without albums, are released rather than existing albums.
Music Video
One of the success factors of K-POP is a music video. A well-made music video is also one of the secret weapons that catch the attention of fans. The concept that matches the song, the use of props, and the harmony of costumes that make use of individual characteristics and various special effects enhance the visual beauty to the fullest and make fans see it again.
Compared to foreign singers' music videos, K-POP singers' music videos have their own characteristics, and foreign fans also accept it without any reluctance. The reason is that the music videos of Korean singers do not contain only dances and songs, but because they are made in a single film. In fact, there are cases in which various singers make the story of the music video connected, and from the perspective of the fans, it makes them wait and look forward to the next music video.
Group dance
Group dance (群舞, group dance) is one of the important elements in K-pop. The group dance started with singers changing seats when several people decorate the stage. From the stage of Seo Tae-ji and the children, the transformation became public, and this influenced K-pop choreography in the future.
K-pop choreography has the characteristic of point choreography, and it mainly refers to the act of imprinting easy choreography in the hook part. This point choreography often follows the lyrics. Point choreography also decides whether a song has a hit.
An idol who matches the choreography's breath and shows the choreography as if it were one person is called a group dance or a sword group dance.
Songs are sometimes written along with the choreography, and the focus is on whether or not fans can easily follow them. “K-pop wants to be with her fans,” said Ellen Kim, an LA choreographer. So the choreography tends to come out easily,” she says.
fashion
K-pop has a great influence on fashion as well. The style of a K-pop singer is catching the eyes of young people, especially in the pan-Asian region. Therefore, the clothing industry is marketing clothes that have become famous due to singers. Big Bang's G-Dragon is receiving love calls from many overseas fashion industries, and 2NE1's CL also worked with designer Jeremy Scott.
In January 2012, Korean singers held a fashion show in Japan, and a whopping 33,000 people were fashion show pop singers. Fortunately, pop singer fashion was a problem because it was not suitable for the weather (leggings fashion). In the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the fashion of the Republic of Korea is secretly trending despite closed regulations. In the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, unfree fashions such as high heels, tops, and fashion accessories are popularized through K-pop.
Fandom
In the case of K-POP idols, most of the idols launch official fan clubs and engage in activities while securing a fixed fan base. Most of the idols have been active without a fan club for a short period of less than a year after their debut, and a fan club for at least two years. Most are based on a one-year cycle, and the price varies from 10,000 won to 30,000 won. Joined fans have a sense of belonging, engage in fandom activities, give differential benefits to fans who joined the fan club and those who did not, and make the joined fans think, "You were good to join."
In addition, they send garlands at concerts, rice tea or snack tea when filming entertainment or dramas, send gifts for artists, and support for singers. There are also counter tribute events, such as preparing a car. In addition, they unite by counting the identity of singers and fans, such as official colors, official cheering slogans, and official cheering sticks.
Disadvantages and criticism
Competition and short lifespan of artists
One of the characteristics of K-pop is that the market changes rapidly and competition is fierce. In Korea, more than 60 idol groups are mass-produced a year. But most of the groups sparkle and disappear.
Short life of hit songs
According to the Korea Times, K-pop mainly produces hit songs that are easily consumed, that is, short-lived.
Most K-pop songs gain popularity on the charts for a while and then disappear quickly, and few have entered the charts for a few weeks. K-pop songs mainly consist of dances that can be easily followed by an easy melody — Super Junior's'Sorry Sorry', Girls' Generation's'G', Brown Eyed Girls''Abracadabra', and Big Bang's'Fantastic Baby'. Songs are usually consumed for a month or two, and they quickly become a substitute.
Singer Insoon said, “The song we used to do is still being sung. But these days, music is less than 3 months old. The music market's sense of responsibility is disappearing.”
The claim that it is consumed and disappears quickly requires more objective and long-term verification. Most of the songs cited by the critics have passed a long time, but are loved by the public and K-pop fans.
The situation in which hit songs are consumed for a month or two on the charts and replaced by new songs is the same in other countries. Rather, the active creation of creators can be viewed positively.
Hook song controversy
The controversy that it causes the flood of hook songs due to repeated passages has not been dealt with much since the early days of the K-pop boom as other popular music of various genres in various regions including old America is no different.
